Sprache in der zeitgen\u00f6ssischen Kunst\u201c Werke von zeitgen\u00f6ssischen K\u00fcnstlerinnen und K\u00fcnstlern aus S\u00fcdostasien und der Pazifikregion vorzustellen. Zum ersten Mal wird eine umfassende Schau dieser Art mit Fokus auf Malerei und Skulptur in \u00d6sterreich gezeigt. \u201eTerra Incognita\u201c wird kuratiert von einem der f\u00fchrenden Experten f\u00fcr zeit-gen\u00f6ssische s\u00fcdostasiatische und austra-lische Kunst, Matthias Arndt. Vorgestellt werden 18 ausgew\u00e4hlte Kunstpositionen von Jumaldi Alfi (geb. 1972, Indonesien), Khadim Ali (geb. 1978, Pakistan), Del Kathryn Barton (geb. 1972, Australien), Zean Cabangis (geb. 1985, Philippinen), Jigger Cruz (geb. 1984, Philippinen), Marina Cruz (geb. 1982, Philippinen), FX Harsono (geb. 1949, Indonesien), Mit Jai Inn (Geb. 1960, Thailand), Eko Nugroho (geb. 1977, Indonesien), Patricia Piccinini (geb.1965, Australien), Jos\u00e9 Santos III (geb. 1970, Philippinen), Svay Sareth (geb. 1972, Kambodscha), Yudi Sulistyo (geb. 1972, Indonesien), Melati Suryodarmo (geb. 1969, Indonesien), Agus Suwage (geb.1959, Indonesien), Rodel Tapaya (geb. 1980, Philippinen), Entang Wiharso (geb.1967, Indonesien), Kaa Yeo (geb. 1989, Philippinen). Als der \u00f6sterreichische Literaturwissenschaftler Oskar Walzel 1917 eine \u201ewechselseitige Erhellung der K\u00fcnste\u201c forderte und damit eine Zusammenlegung kunst- und literaturwissenschaftlicher Begrifflichkeiten meinte, konnte er kaum ahnen, wie sehr die beiden k\u00fcnstlerischen Disziplinen nur 100 Jahre sp\u00e4ter ineinander verwachsen sein w\u00fcrden: Kunst und Sprache stehen heute in einem vielschichtigen und regen Dialog.<\/p>\n<p>Die Ausstellung \u201eTerra Incognita\u201c versucht, die Liaison von Sprache und Kunst, den Moment des Narrativen und die Bedeutung von identit\u00e4tsstiftenden Symbolen f\u00fcr die zeitgen\u00f6ssische Kunst mit einer Reihe von Arbeiten indonesischer, philippinischer, pakistanischer, kambodschanischer und australischer K\u00fcnstlerinnen und K\u00fcnstler zu ergr\u00fcnden. Der Name der Schau spielt auf die weiterhin vorherrschende Unterrepr\u00e4sentation s\u00fcdostasiatischer und australischer K\u00fcnstler in der eurozentrischen und nordamerikanisch gepr\u00e4gten Kunstwelt an. Fernab von einem westlichen Kanon der \u00c4sthetik und Bildkultur haben sich besonders in S\u00fcdostasien \u00fcber Jahrtausende Bildsprachen herausgebildet, die auf den ersten Blick neu, streckenweise gar fremd erscheinen m\u00f6gen. Aus den Codes und Symbolen, die sich in den gezeigten Arbeiten finden, lassen sich dabei etliche Verweise, Referenzen und Narrative lesen. Helden und Legenden aus Texten, die unter anderem aus dem heutigen Iran stammen, werden von Khadim Ali (Pakistan) scheinbar spielend leicht in ein System der visuellen Poetik \u00fcbersetzt. Mithilfe von traditionellen Methoden wie dem \u201eneem rang\u201c f\u00e4rbt der K\u00fcnstler Teppiche ein und erz\u00e4hlt identit\u00e4tsstiftende Sagen mit seiner liebevollen, eleganten \u00c4sthetik nach. Eko Nugroho (Indonesien) verarbeitet Elemente aus Street Art, Comic-Kultur und Fotografie zu einer medialen Vermischung, die auf subtile Art von der Spannung zwischen islamisch-hierarchisch gepr\u00e4gter Gesellschaft und westlichem Einfluss in seiner Heimat Indonesien erz\u00e4hlt. Typografische Elemente transportieren humorvolle, pointierte Botschaften, die nicht nur zentraler, sondern auch vollkommen nat\u00fcrlicher Bestandteil der Arbeiten von Nugroho sind. Entang Wiharso (Indonesien) tr\u00e4gt f\u00fcr seine Arbeiten Autolack auf Aluminium auf, was selbst die surrealistische, manchmal tieftraurige \u00c4sthetik, derer er sich bedient, nach Pop und Hedonismus aussehen l\u00e4sst. In einer Zeit, in der die Gesellschaft von der Kunst eine zunehmende Politisierung und klare Positionierung fordert, sind mit FX Harsono (Indonesien) und Patricia Piccinini (Australien) au\u00dferdem ein K\u00fcnstler und eine K\u00fcnstlerin Teil von \u201eTerra Incognita\u201c, die Kritik am politischen System und an aktuellen Entwicklungen in Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft nicht scheuen. Ihre Arbeiten sto\u00dfen Dialoge und Diskussionen an, sie erz\u00e4hlen traurige, manchmal auch aufr\u00fcttelnde Geschichten, arbeiten mit Narrativen und wiederkehrenden Symbolen und machen damit letztlich all das, was gemeinhin der Sprache zugeschrieben wird.
