Die emotionale Kraft, die seinen Jahrhundertromanen wie Der Gl\u00f6ckner von Notre Dame (1831) und Les Mis\u00e9rables (1862) innewohnt, fesselt bis heute eine weltweite Leserschaft. Der vision\u00e4re Schriftsteller fr\u00f6nte jahrzehntelang auch einer malerischen Passion. Mit Darstellungen von skurrilen Randexistenzen zollte er Francisco de Goya Tribut. Mit m\u00e4rchenhaft-d\u00fcsteren Darstellungen von Kathedralen und Schl\u00f6ssern beschwor er die Geister einer Vergangenheit herauf, deren kostbare Relikte er gef\u00e4hrdet glaubte. Victor Hugos Freiz\u00fcgigkeit im Umgang mit Malmitteln war dabei schier grenzenlos: In Sepia klecksend, fallweise unter Verwendung unkonventioneller Materialien wie Kaffeesatz oder Staub, lie\u00df er oft das Zufallsprinzip walten, woraus Bilder des Erahnten, der vagen M\u00f6glichkeiten resultierten. In der umfangreichen Schau im Grafischen Kabinett des Leopold Museums werden rund 80 Bl\u00e4tter von Victor Hugo den Werken seiner vormodernen Vorg\u00e4nger wie Alexander Cozens und William Turner gegen\u00fcbergestellt. Gleichzeitig wird das Doppeltalent Hugo unter Ber\u00fccksichtigung der fruchtbaren Verbindungen zu den Pers\u00f6nlichkeiten aus den Bereichen Literatur und Kunst in den Kontext eines bewegten Zeitalters eingebettet.
